Need the full battery? Run all six diagnostics — webcam, microphone, speakers, speed, network, and browser checks — in one pass.
Most webcam problems show up at the worst possible moment: 30 seconds into a meeting. Running this quick webcam test before you join confirms the camera is detected, has permission, and is producing a live image at the resolution your call platform expects.
What this webcam test checks
When you click Start, your browser asks for camera permission, opens the device, and shows the raw video feed plus the device name and active resolution. If you see yourself, the camera works end-to-end — driver, OS permission, browser permission, and the WebRTC pipeline every call app uses.
If the test fails
A black frame usually means another app is holding the camera — quit Zoom, Teams, OBS, and any other browser tab. A 'permission denied' message means the site is blocked: click the padlock in your address bar, reset Camera permission, and reload. If the device dropdown is empty, your operating system can't see the camera at all — check the cable, USB port, or built-in privacy shutter.
Privacy: nothing leaves your device
The video stream is created and rendered entirely inside this browser tab. ReadyForCall has no server-side recording, no analytics on the media stream, and no third-party scripts touching the camera. Closing the tab releases the camera immediately.
Frequently asked questions
How does this online webcam test work?
Your browser's built-in WebRTC API requests permission to access the camera, then renders the live feed back to you. The video stream stays inside the browser tab — nothing is uploaded, recorded, or sent to a server.
Why does my webcam show a black screen?
Almost always another app is holding the camera. Quit Zoom, Teams, Slack, OBS, and any browser tab using the camera, then reload this page. On macOS, also check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
What resolution should my webcam show?
720p (1280×720) is the modern minimum for video calls; 1080p (1920×1080) is comfortable. If the resolution shown is lower, your browser may have selected a fallback profile, or your camera hardware doesn't support higher modes.
Does this webcam test work on Mac, Windows, and Chromebook?
Yes. The test runs inside any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) on macOS, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS. No installation, no extension, no account required.
